The Green Brick
The Green Piece
Thomas Olsen at PDC-Plast talks about the small piece that made a big difference
"A customer called and asked if I could make a cover in a relatively small number of around 500 pieces.
It sounded like a good job. I asked about the size and weight, and together with the customer we found a basis for further dialogue, which we took to a meeting shortly afterwards.
As so many times before, the job started with a plastic part that you couldn't see what it would be used for. This time was no exception. The customer needed PDC-Plast to make a cover, which is a job that we often encounter.
However, it turned out that this cover had to have a very special function. It had to sit as an end cover in a lamp that illuminates the license plate on offshore wind turbines. It is very expensive to repair offshore wind turbines, and therefore it is important to be able to find the right wind turbine quickly. And this is where the license plate with light comes into play.
Specifically, the task was based on a milled item, which was relatively expensive to make. PDC-Plast provided an estimate for drawing, prototyping, mold making and casting. The customer thought that there was a basis for moving forward. The item was drawn up in a 3D model, so that the customer could see the item clearly, and then the 3D model was approved by the customer. PDC Plast started making a casting tool and had the cover put into production.
I always find it fascinating to hear where customers will use the individual items that we make for them. But I really like the fact that PDC Plast could contribute a small piece to the big puzzle of ensuring the production of green energy.”
